screen goes black

I have a Dell Isprion 1000. From time to time the screen goes black. I can lower the screen and it will come back on most of the time. I can hook up an external monitor and when the screen goes black so will the external monitor. Wha problem am I looking at? Thanks

The temp for this laptop stays at a consistant 52 to 54 deg cent.

Hi and welcome to TSF! Since your external monitor goes out as well, it can be devised that the problem lies in your video card. I will do a bit of research and return with a few more answers. Your temps seem okay for a laptop, as high temps for a laptop are usually in the 60-70C range (laptops CPUs are designed to withstand more heat than desktop CPUs).

Thank you for your help so far. I was not sure of the video card or not. It will also go black if you move the screen or bump the laptop. Sometimes it goes completely black and at other times you can still see the desktop in the background very faintly. I have been looking at inverters or backlights but I am at a loss for what it really is. Again, thank you and I look forward to hearing what you find.

The screen just being very faint would be a sign of the backlight or inverter being the problem. But if the external monitor does the same, it is a video card issue.

What graphics card do you have? It is a possibility that the graphics chipset is overheating if it is a high end one.

I noticed there is no separate video card for your computer. This means it uses integrated graphics from the chipset. You might need to replace the motherboard to solve this. Does the computer's fan work properly?

Ii is a Dell Inspiron 1000 with a graphics card SIS M650.

Yea, SiS is integrated video. If a fan issue cannot be solved, a motherboard replacement is up soon. Now, does the fan work? If so, does it stay on?
