Acer Aspire 5580
Hi there,
I've been using my mom's company laptop ever since it was given to her last December. It's an Aspire 5580, 1.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 256 megs of RAM, running Windows XP SP2. Recently, the laptop started slowing down. And then this morning, after I tried shutting it down, it hanged. I pressed on the power button for a few seconds to forcefully power it off, but when I restarted it, Windows won't start-up anymore. At least, the loading screen became really, really slow. I tried booting to the last good configuration, but nothing seemed to happen, so I restarted and selected Safe Mode. A bunch of lines appeared, all starting with "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS" plus a file path. The same thing happens during Safe Mode with Command Prompt. After a few minutes of this without anything happening, I gave up and switched the laptop off. Is there a quick way to fix this without formatting? Otherwise I'll just reinstall Windows (which I hate doing because it takes too long :P). Thanks for the help! - Francis Last edited by focoma; 04-07-2007 at 08:50 PM. Reason: clarification |

Re: Acer Aspire 5580
Hi Francis,
It sounds like the Windows installation has been damaged. If you have a retail Windows XP CD, you can use that to perform a repair install of Windows XP, which won't delete the data. http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winx...exfullpage.htm

Re: Acer Aspire 5580
Thanks, TheMatt. I'll follow your advice after reading through the guide. Meanwhile, I have a few more details about my problem.
Remember how I said that the loading time became really slow (I'm talking about the black screen with a white loading bar at the bottom that appears before starting Windows; I've only seen it in this laptop)? I decided to wait it out. After probably five minutes, the load bar is just about full when a blue screen appeared and then the laptop automatically restarted. Is there any common reason why these things happen? Is this normal for Windows laptops? Or is this a Windows thing? How can I avoid it? Ah, well. On to some OS repairing... Re: Acer Aspire 5580
1/ Can anyone point me toward the "Service" Manual for:
Acer Aspire 5582 (5580 Series)... 2/ And could someone tell me why it's not listed in Acer website support? (Does it come under another model no.)! Many Thanks in anticipation... All the best - Blo. |
