RESOLVED IBM ThinkPad 600E - bits and bobs

I have a ThinkPad 600E, a great little laptop. It was given to me because someone was throwing it out due to the battery being rubbish, and there something that I have never known about it, something which Google has failed to answer.

It has a TrackPoint mouse system, pictures here, with three buttons below the keyboard. I have never known what the larger button does, or how to find out/change it's function, despite checking the user guide and downloading the configuration utility from the IBM site. I was hoping to make it a middle mouse button for use with firefox etc.

Anyway, any help would be great. Thanks!

Hi,

Have you tried clicking it to see what happens?

You can give this software a shot.
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/KEY...Point-55.shtml

If it is a mouse button, it might be able to configure it to a specific function.

Re: IBM ThinkPad 600E - bits and bobs

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I have tried clicking it and seeing what happens! :) And that's nothing at all...

I should have mentioned that the ThinkPad is running Windows Me, and so that software doesn't run in on the laptop. I hunted around for another version of the same driver, but even one that was designed for older OS didn't run, saying that it was incompatible with my version of Windows.

I have access to another hard drive with XP loaded on it, which is unfortunately a bit slow for everyday ThinkPad use, but when I can get hold of that in a few weeks I'll try the software again.

In the meantime, do any other 600E users out there know how to get the button working?

Re: IBM ThinkPad 600E - bits and bobs

Hi there. The large button you're refering to is the IBM TrackPoint Scroll Button. With the proper drivers installed, if pressed in conjunction with moving the TrackPoint "dot" up and down, the page or window will scroll. Here is the driver for Windows Me:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=DSHY-3PWQT4

The TrackPoint driver above is a standard driver that works with all 600E computers. For other drivers, I suggest you provide the XXXX-XXX code on the bottom of the laptop. It is located on a black and white sticker above a small, thin barcode. With this, we can provide you with the remainder of the drivers.

I highly recomment migrating your system to Windows 2000, if possible. Windows Me is buggy and is considered a vulnerable OS because Microsoft has stopped supporting it and patching it. The 2000/XP TrackPoint driver can be found here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4KMUYL

You can enter the driver site here by typing up your Type and Model code (XXXX-XXX):

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?brandind=10&familyind=50130&machineind=0&modelind=0&operatingsystemind=49979&template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FdownloadsDriversLandingPage.vm&validate=true

I suggest installing the following drivers (as not all are necessary):
  • Configuration Utility
  • TrackPoint Driver
  • Battery MaxiMiser
  • Monitor File
  • On-Screen Display Utility
Most are installable via executable extracted directly into "C:/DRIVERS". If you don't know how to install it, see the readme files from the Lenovo download page for that driver. Hope this helps.

-Eddie

Re: IBM ThinkPad 600E - bits and bobs

Thank you Eddie, what a great post! I'll try the drivers in the morning.

I will also bear your remarks about Windows Me in mind, which to be honest I really hadn't considered before, so thanks for that. I'll mark this thread resolved when I've checked the drivers work. Nice one.

Re: IBM ThinkPad 600E - bits and bobs

It works very well. Thanks again!

---

Update: Just found out accidently by closing a tab that it now also works as a middle mouse button - success!

Re: IBM ThinkPad 600E - bits and bobs

You're welcome! Yes, if you don't have the option enabled or you simply don't have the driver installed, it will be used as a center button. It can also be used as a "magnify" function. If you install the driver, you can set what it does. I believe you can also set-up middle button emulation (emulates the middle button when you press the left and right buttons simultaneously) so you don't lose that functionality.
