Very Slow
I found my laptop has become very slow. After log-in it takes almost 2 min for it to be useable. Also when I open an IE or a program it takes a few seconds longer than it used to take to open up. I know computers so I already did a defrag, spyware scan, deleted temp files, deleted prefetch files, disabled some start-up programs, and disabled some background programs. I have a 40gb hd with roughly 13gb of free space. I also have 1gb of memory. Is there something else I should try?? I would hate to have to start from scratch again with a clean install of XP but the slowness is bugging.

You could try posting a Hijack this log for our security guys to take a look at incase you missed anything.
http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...sting-log.html Also try visiting pcpitstop.com and run the full system scan. Let us know what it finds.

Check your prefetch-make sure layout.ini was not deleted. Generally, deleting the prefetch is a mistake and should not be done. It will be rebuilt, however "layout.ini" may not be, in which case you will always run slower unless you manually rebuild it
Does your defragger optimize the drive by moving and arranging data so that files are contigous as opposed to just moving data so that used space is contigous ? Defrag page file: Disable hibernation in control panel>power options Set virtual memory initial size to 0, set maximum size to 0- Start>right click My Computer>properties>advanced tab>in the performance box>settings>advanced tab>virtual memory box Turn off system restore Reboot Defrag drive- if your internet is cable or dsl-disconnect modem, disable antivirus software Re-enable all of the above- set virtual memory initial and maximum size to 1.5 or 2 times physical memory. Both values should be the same Check transfer mode of drive start>rite click my computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager>expand ide controller>rite click on primary ide channel>properties>advanced settings> Transfer mode should be DMA if available Current Mode should be dma not PIO |
