Windows Freezes on boot screen

MY sisters laptop is freezing on the windows boot screen.

The progress bar will pass a few times then the computer just freezes

I have managed to load it to safe mode.

The laptop is a

toshiba satellite pro SP6400
XP pro
Pentium 4
256mb Ram
Geforce (not sure exact model) graphics
40gb harddrive

I have asked and nothing new has been installed in the last week and the system has no spyware or virus.

This happened after the laptop was left on and the battery ran out, the computer was not powered off.

will i have to do a fresh install?

You can insert your windows CD and try a repair install you won't lose any saved data its just re-installing the windows system files. Make sure from in the bios that your laptop boots from the cd drive first before the hard drive.
