Lcd Screen

I have my laptop connected to an external monitor but sometimes my lcd won't work. When I switch it back in between external and lcd, the lcd will not come on at times. Is this a sign that it may be going out??

I have a dell inspiron 8600. My laptop is about 3 years old.

The connection I should be checking is the point where it connects to the motherboard correct? I've double checked that and its connected.

Is it possible that it is just the screen itself? I don't want to purchase a new screen and it ends up doing the same thing.

On your laptop do you have an FN key, because i have the same issue, and have to press the FN key and F5 to make my screen refresh and come back on. Make sure its all correctly set up and detected in your display properties.

on my laptop its the FN key and F8 key. Pressing those keys will disable the external monitor but then nothing will show up on the LCD. Pressing those keys again will enable the external monitor. 1 out of maybe 8 times will the LCD come on. When the LCD was working fine it would show the XP logo during boot and then switch to the external at the log-in screen...is that normal? Now during boot the LCD stays black for about 30 seconds then the log-in screen appears on the external. There are also occasions where you can see the XP logo but its really really dim. you have to concetrate to see it. I also did notice that when the LCD would come on, it wasn't as bright as it was before even after adjusting the settings. I'm assuming it could be the fluorescent bulb just on its last breath. I've checked the connection to the motherboard and it is securely connected, do I need to check the connection to the actual LCD???
