Mistake Pavillion DV1000 replaced screen now no power

I just dont get it, Customer comes in with the system powered it on, screen was cracked on inside. Got the new screen in and did the repair, smooth transition, no problems or so I thought. Put it back together and tried to turn it on. Dead as a door nail.
Im like well no power to battery but the charger is with customer. Get to work put it on one of those universal chargers at 18V because unit called for 18.5. the battery light flashed a quick second and then nothing - press the power button and nothing.
Moved it up to 19V no charge light - still dead.
I retraced my steps but all was good, I mean come on it is a screen replacement not chip replacement.
Before you ask, I did try another universal as well as a different customers battery (same one) and charger got nothing.
I was wondering about the powerboard. Considering this unit is made tighter then a bread basket and the only board internally I touched was the powerboard when I plugged the LCD Cable in.
Does anyone know or could you please tell me, If the powerboard is bad will that also stop the charging light from coming on. The charging light is not on the powerboard itself but on a portion of the motherboard far away from the powerboard.
Also could I have shorted something out by increasing the voltage to 19 when it calls for 18.5,
Thanks in advance for any help you can give this poor fool!

My friend, I'm not sure if I can help, but I did notice if you do a google search on that model, like, "Pavillion DV1000 service recalls" you'll see it has many bad things out there thats said about it that don't paint a good picture. Perhaps you might see something that will help.

I'm not sure if you should go on that type of search, but it does paint that laptop as junk. then there all ways is the idea the new screen you installed is no good, I've had that happen many times with new hardware thats bad.

Don't knock your self out thinking its something you did, chances are the unit was on its way out, but thats if you find its not the new screen.

Good luck with it, hopefully you can find what went on it this time.

Thanks for your reply, I am a bit wrecked about it.
I will check out the google search as specified. I went and put the other (broken) screen back on but got nothing. Considering the powerboard was the only one that I made any sort of contact with that was why I was wondering.
Just dont want the customer to assume I am at fault, screen repair is one of the easiest compared to component level repair.
Thanks again for your insight on the POS.

My System

I understand your in a very hard spot with this customer not knowing the world of computer fixing.

Perhaps try telling the customer with circuitry going bad is not uncommon, because the motherboards that are in laptops really go through a lot, all ways being exposed to very high heat all the time makes them fragile in time when handled, and I say that because what happen to me.

What happen to me was with one of them floor console TV sets, one day we decided to move the furniture around, so after we moved the TV set across the room we found the circuitry boards inside went bad from very little flexing that happen inside the wooden console as we moved it across the room, you would never have thought with that very little tweaking it was enough to do the trick in making the TV set stop working.

Who knows what happens to circuitry when they have been subjected to very high heat over and over, then when cooled down who knows what can happen to them? I suggest they get fragile in time from that kind of exposure.

Good luck...

Thanks for your response. Little known fact about this system is 8 out of 10 people are complaining about it. Overheating being one of the issues.
I do my best to insure a repair goes smooth but sometimes things do happen and I feel that when explained to the customer they just think I am the problem. I know what I am doing and screen repair is one of the easier of the fixes on laptops. I cannot understand how the unit is totally dead, no lights at all. It is a Scooby Doo Mystery I guess.
So have you ever had to fix a power board on a unit? Do you think that or know if the power board goes will it also look as though the unit does not charge. The light for that is on the Mobo where as the unit power light is on the powerboard. Any help would be appreciated!

I can only guess at a few things to try since I really don't know the system you have there.

Since your saying its dead in the water I'm going to suggest a few things you probably tried all ready, but have you tried the basics yet? like check the power cord by it self? hook it up a meter, then twist it around and bend the cord to see if its got a dead spot in it, or is the 110 volt reading it bouncing all around, or if its even reading like 80 volts? then that will tell you there is a problem.
even check it with an ohm meter for resistance.

Then try checking where the power source comes into the unit if the power reaches there okay and that its a strong 110 volt, or 112, what ever that power outlet is reading. also make sure your wall plug in is okay at 110 volts, because it does seem funny that it went dead all of a sudden.

Anything other than the basic checking I'm not sure what else to say, maybe even giving the motherboard a little bit of a tweeking to see if there is something with it that makes it come on and off, then that would be great to show the customer the board has showed its fault.

I'm suggesting a few dumb things as if the battery it as dead as they come and the customer works off of a power cord, see what the battery reads with the volts?

good luck, let me know what you find, best wishes, Joe

Re: Pavillion DV1000 replaced screen now no power

Hi, everyone. Please go to http://getsatisfaction.com/hp/topics...mebody_help_us and write your comments there. It's a customer satisfaction/complaint site and HP actually frequents it. If we get enough people complaining, someone might actually do something about it.

Thanks
