Hi Speed Usb Problems
Ok. i have a Dell XPS laptop. XPS laptops do not come without hi speed usb ports. I have an external hdd and a flash drive both meant for hi speed usb ports. Each time i plug each of them in, my computer informs me that these devices can perform faster if i plug them into a hi speed usb 2.0 port, click here to see available hi speed ports. I updated all my drivers, i uninstalled old drivers and installed new ones. I tried every usb port i have, and nothing has worked. When i click on the balloon to see available ports, it informs me that i have 8 available but none of the actual 6 that i have work for hi speed. Any suggestions?

Hey,
Maybe the drivers for your USB devices need to be updated? Maybe you need to update your version of XP? I noticed that problem on XP, but not SP2, kind of weird. Try calling Dell, maybe it's a known problem in XPS laptops. Regards, Brandon |

What is the exact model number of your Dell laptop? You should install the chipset drivers and see if that helps. Also, switch the USB mode in the BIOS to 1.1, save, and then back to 2.0, and save again, and see if that fixes it by chance.

Have you done a bandwidth benchmark? Try copying exactly 100 MB of files or something like that and see how long it takes. Sometimes Windows will lie to you.

Hi,
just got my xps 1710 and googled for some of the same problem. I'm running XP Media Center, but I got same problem. I was primarely trying to uninstall the McAffee anti virus bundled with the computer, but gave up and reinstalled the OS. During the process installing driver through the resource cd from dell, one of the points was installing the driver for the chipset(A09) in the computer. The lights of the mouse turned off and didn't work in any of the usb ports. I rolled back the restorings points in the OS and when restoring to the point before installing the chipset the mouse lit again. So now I'm stuck with not updating the chipset, so if the system is okey with that I'm not going to do anything with it. |

ya i have same OS. i was on vista beta for a lil while and didnt even think to see if i had the usb problems. I havent set up a time for dell to pick up my computer yet but when i do, they plan to to fix the usb problem. have either of you performed a bandwidth benchmark yet?
Also with XPS when you return from standby it is suppose to make a ding sound. sometimes does it repeat this sound over and over a few times until completely going again?

Just to verify, when you installed the updates, did you reload the Dell Notebook System software and the chipset software?
The latest chipset software for the XPS M1210 is (http://ftp.dell.com/chipset/R114079.EXE). The Dell Notebook System software (basically, Dell specific additions to the chipset software) is (http://ftp.dell.com/utility/R120775.EXE) and technically should be installed before the chipset software, but probably won't matter if it is installed afterwards. The other fix I have used for USB problems was to open Device Manager, bring up the Properties window for one of the USB controllers and on the Drivers tab select the 'Update Driver' button. When it asks if it can check the internet for updates tell it yet, which will allow it to pull an updated driver from the Microsoft website. I can't say for sure if this will help you, but it is worth a try. Am I correct that you have tried those USB 2.0 devices on other computers and had them work fine there? Larry

I havent done a benchmark check yet. I got a small program called PC Wizard who i Compare the computers i got to see if they running ok.
But as long as I don't install the chipset driver it works okey. The USB port is running ok, checked the firewire port which is also working okey with a maxtor harddrive. By the way, username DellCA, are you working for Dell? Running on a XPS M1710 still got problem with one thing, the Device Manager still got question mark for the SM Bus Controller, and tells me it can't install the Hardware? I've tried to install the driver on the CD from Dell but with no luck. Could you please tell me if it's possible to install the driver for the chipset with another revision? |

Hi,
Have you gone to the item in the device manager that says the word "enhanced" and clicked to update that specific driver. If you have XP loaded with SP2, then that should load those 2.0 drivers from your OS that is loaded.
