Sony screen has red hue then goes dark

I have a Sony PCG-K15 and when it is first turned on the display has a redish hue and the display jumps around a little, after about a minute the display goes very dark. I can connect an external monitor to it and that display is fine. I think it may be the LCD Inverter. Does anyone know what may be causing this? I don't want to just start swapping parts.

Thanks,
wbc

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I had already bought and installed a LCD inverter before I received your post. After the inverter did not fix the problem I concluded it had to be the lamp.
