install windows from external dvd
My friend has an older compaq laptop and the cd rom does not work. She bought an external LG DVD to install windows on the laptop but there is nothing in the setup that will allow you to select the external drive. Is there a way that you can get the laptop to see the external drive without an operating system on the computer ???

Does the machine have a floppy drive? If so you should be able to make a boot disk to allow for USB support.
