Cry no audio when playing dvd movies

I have a fujitsu siemens amilo laptop with windows xp home.
when i try to play dvd movies using either interactual player or windows media player there is no sound. I have checked control panel/audio and all the volume levels are up and nothing is muted. system sounds are working ok and mp3 files and downloaded video clips play ok it is only when playing dvd's the problem presents. Does anyone have any ideas.
