Laptop battery charger

I have Toshiba sattelite Celeron 420 1.6GHz Model L35-S2151. I didn't have a power cord to it so I used one from IBM withj similar jack but it was 16V instead of 19V. The battery was completely dead, so when i plugged it in the sharging light came up and then went out. When I tried to turn it on, it did not do anything.

So I removed the battery to ispect it and it read 14.4v. I turned the main switch on and the laptop started working. No noticable problems. As soon as I plug the battery, the laptop shuts off.

-Could the 16v damage the board?
-Maybe the battery needs 19V to charge?

I doubt you damaged anything, however batteries need a charger that supplies a greater voltage and amperage than the battery itself in order to charge. If he IBM charger only puts out 16V and the Toshiba requires 19V then you basically did not charge the battery...Toshiba is having a sale right now, so you should be able to pick up a new charger for a reasonable price

Thanks twajetmech, I thought so too, but just wanted to hear other opinions. Also, I did hear high pitch noise coming out of the speakers when the charging light was on, and then light went out and so did the noise, and it did not come back. Is there a special way to handle a dead lithium battery?

Handle ? well it should be disposed of properly, take it to comp-usa or other large retail computer store for disposal (call them or check their website out for details). If you mean can it be brought back to life....if it is simply fully discharged it may recharge when you get the new charger...try that first, just make sure it does not get overheated in the process

Thanks for info. I meant if there are any additional steps for charging without making a mess.

I have several Toshiba laptops that are 19V instead of the standard Toshiba 15V. I've used those IBM supplies with no problem. A few even got a charge on the battery. To my knowledge, no damage should've been done. Twajetmech's suggestions are also fit.

So IBM "stuff" is somewhat compatible with Toshiba? Also, that makes me feel a little better. Thanks for info.

It just happens to work. I have another Toshiba laptop that will only charge with the IBM adapter is it is off, otherwise it only supplies power and doesn't charge.

I bought universal power supply and it works as should--battery charges while the laptop is on or off. However, this the paper says to use "N1" connector but only two fit--"N2" and N3," from which only "N3" works. This is for those who might buy one of those power supplies. They are costly, but work in house, car, and airplane.

Thanks for support.
