Welcome to TSF. Try removing some of that RAM you put in. If it starts up, you have an instant solution . If not, there's other hardware issues. Was the machine reported to be working in the eBay auction?

Hmm. Try pressing keys like Esc, Tab, or Spacebar. This sometimes exits the splash screen so you can see what's happening in the background. You can also try resetting your CMOS by pulling the battery or shorting the appropriate contacts. Alternatively, pull the battery and power cord and hold the power button for a good 30 seconds. Plug it back in and see if that works.

I would try to reset the CMOS. Unplug the laptop, and remove the batterty for 1/2 an hour.

Also, if you can get into the BIOS, try disabling the quiet boot feature.

Just unplug the laptop power cord. That should be simple. Then, remove the battery. If you don't know where is, look in the manual. If you didn't get it when you bought it, try contacting the seller. Removing the battery completely for 30 mins is how to reset the CMOS.

On many laptops, the holding of the power button forces the capacitor to drain, hence clearing the CMOS.

It doesn't matter if the battery doesn't hold a charge, there might be just enough power to keep the settings stored in the CMOS and the capacitors charged. If you have tried both of the suggestions given to reset the CMOS, look at the next paragraph.

The next thing I would check for is leaking capacitors. In a laptop, they are smaller (less tall) than in a desktop. You probably won't be able to inspect all of them, but if you do see any, then that is probably the problem, and you would have to get a new motherboard, and it would probably be easier to just get a new laptop.
