Hi
I have a Dell Latitude d800, running Windows XP Proffesional edition. For some reason my laptop wont power on unless i move a usb device (ive been using a usb extension cord) in and out of the side port when pushing the power button. The reason for this completely baffles me. Any help greatly appreciated. Ben Thomas |

Ben,
First off, welcome to TSF, the best place on the net to find answers and to spend some time... In all probably its just coincidential that jiggling the usb device helps with the power problem. And by coincident I mean "being nearby" not "happening at the same time by chance". What's probably going on is the power plug-in leads have started to work loose from the MB inside the laptop. My D800 did this and the tech who replaced the MB said it was fairly common. When you giggle the usb device it causes the loose connection to make enough contact to power up. Is it still under warranty? I don't know how difficult it is to fix yourself. Any other TSF members know if this a DIY problem? |

One generally accepted answer is to disassemble the laptop and take it to a TV shop to resolder the DC jack. You might want to purchase another jack as the old could be damaged or not be re-usable. That said, some laptops use a power board that contains the dc jack and other jacks as well that simply screws on to the mobo or chassis, so you may be able to purchase a power board and screw it in your self. A little research does show a power board but I was unable to see what it consisted of (no image available). You should search for a manual to get further detail
