problem connecting laptop to a printer and to treo
I tried connecting my printer (savin 2518d) and my treo 650 to my new inspiron e1705 laptop (Windows XP). I downloaded the drivers on the installation disc, but for some reason I cannot print from the computer and cannot sync up my palm treo 650. I have tried everything that the windows xp troubleshooter has suggested, all to no avail. Additionally, I have been unable to print from the control prompt, (postscript printer).
The treo and printer both work when connected to my desktop. Is this problem due to the fact that I am using a laptop? Some other reason?? Thanks in advance for any advice. |

When I try to print, I just get a message that it is unable to print document. If I open the print dialog box, it says that there is an error printing. As far as the palm is concerned, I get a message on my palm sayint that "the connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."

Hi,
Unfortunately, not very many printers connect via ethernet cable. The only thing that would justify this is if it is a networked printer. That is, you have it hooked up to another computer or hooked up directly to a router. Printers are designed to connect directly to computers via IEEE1284 Parallel or USB. While you can thoeretically use a crossover cable to accomplish this over ethernet, I'm willing to bet it's over parallel or USB. Check the connections on the back of you printer and see if those ports exist. Also, it would be helpful to know the entire setup of your desktop and its network. You may also need to set the port of the driver to connect to the printer. For the Treo, take a look at your taskbar. Look on the right where there are icons. Look for the hotsync icon and right click it. Make sure local or local usb is checked. Write back!
