IBM thinkpad 600
Has anyone had this fault before? On power on there is no display or POST beeps. However the leds indicate all on initially and then the hard drive goes amber. The right hand led remains green (not sure what that is?) The speakers hiss but thats it. I woiuld expect to get some indications if the hard drive was defective but it makes no difference if fitted or not.
I think the motherboard may be the problem but nothing is visible has anyone any help or ideas where to get hold of one ? |

Hi and welcome to TSF. You have the ThinkPad 600, not the 600E or 600X, correct? Please provide your type-model code on the botton of your machine. It is located on a black and white sticker above a barcode. Please also grab the diagonal size of the screen. The 'right hand LED' is the sleep indicator. Aside from the speakers, do you hear any other noises from the system. If the hard drive were the problem, the system would power up and give an IDE0 Error or something else to do with the hard drive.

Yep its a Thinkpad 600 type 2645-850 if that helps? No other noises at all except a mush / white noise from the speakers. Am i correct even if the hard drive was defective it would try to boot and display something? Thats why Im thinking the motherboard or processor.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...Entry=2645-850 Parts for it are here: http://www.impactcomputers.com/ibmpa...rts-and-a.html Also, try disassembling it halfway and reseating the processor module. Some good instructions are here: http://brej.org/inside/thinkpad600e/index.html Stop at the CPU removal and just put it back in. Apply some good pressure and reassemble the machine.

This problem is far deeper than a video problem. If the power light doesn't come on, it is either the motherboard or the CPU. These CPU boards are prone to chip creep, so reseating it may solve the problem.

POST isn't close to running. On IBMs, the HD indicator turns on to show the system is powering up. When there is steady electricity going through all parts (after 2-5 seconds), the power light will turn on and the screen will show the IBM splash. The HD light will turn off and POST will execute. This is either power, the CPU or the motherboard. If you don't have access to another IBM power supply, go right to the CPU part I discussed. Otherwise, try the new adapter, then the CPU.

Re: IBM thinkpad 600
I'm having a similar problem with my 600x-2645 5EU where it appeared that the inverter had gone bad since I would get a quick flash of full video at boot-up and then it would go very dim (I mean turn off the room lights to barely see what was on the screen). So I bought a used one off ebay that claimed it was test and I'm getting the same result (plus I've ripped the speaker cable and broken the plastic surrounding the keyboard) but I am determined to figure this one out!!!
I've tried the reseating the CPU as explained in this thread. What else should I try / replace? Thanks, Rod
