Batt Preservation Question

Hi,

I read elsewhere that to preserve lappy batt----esp given I only use mine mobile occasionally, we should charge our batts fully and then remove them, to preserve their potential over time.

My questions are: a) is this right? and b) for long intervals when a notebook is only used via A/C power how long would it take on average for a removed battery to loose its charge---meaning requiring putting back in to fully charge again, and c) if a is right, shoiuld we wait until removed batt is fully DISCHARGED before installing and recharging?

When I thought it was time to recharge mine yesterday, I installed it & noticed it was still 84% charged.

Yes, i am confu-sed.
This is re Alienware Sentia 223; Pent M 2.0; 1GB ram; 60GB HDD; XP Home; blue eyes (lol)
Thanks!!!

Jill

Lithium Ion batteries (LiIon) should be kept at a 70-80% charge for shelf life. Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) should be kept at about halfway.

Hi,

Thanks you guys 4 responding; re fast typing and hating editing, I relate, no apologies needed. I have lithium-ion......am attaching section from the aW Manual.....it helped, but still do not get if we should get removed batt discharge fully before recharging.....or how long it might take for it to do this while removed---when they say "while not being used" do they mean OUT OF THE LAPPY or in the lappy but lappy on A/C? Sorry if these are dumb questions, I am just not clear and either is manual.

Thanks!
Jill

No question is dumb! It can mean both. If you leave a battery in a PC and the battery is never used, expect it to die quickly. If you leave a LiIon battery is discharged and left out of the machine for a week or two, it will undercharge, killing the lithium cells inside.

Laboye....

OK thanks for not saying OMG how dumb R U?.....I did another scan and attached something even more confusing.....but I had left the battery out of the Alien for at least 6 weeks and last nite put it back and it was still 84% charged.

I do not get this, OK?

I also do not get the recalibration via the bios thingy.
Thanks again,
Jill

Well, you try not to leave the battery fully charged because it can decalibrate it. LiIon batteries tend to drain the final 2 cells before the others when left alone like that on a full charge. On a 70-80% charge, those are already drained and the new drainage will occur on the first cells, respectively. Reclibration usually completely discharges all of the cells and charges them up again. It is also known as reconditioning.

OK......kinda, I think. So last nite, finding batt 84% charged after leaving it out for wut felt like evah....and then letting it recharge to 100% not a good thingy probably. Part I focused on was that average batt holds around 300 charges and then buh-bye....go online and get a new one for 100 with shipping......so am trying to be shrewd & pragmatic.......neither one my thing.

Thanks,
Jill

Just remember not to charge it up to 100 if you plan to leave it on a shelf. When you get a new battery, make sure it has at least 6 cells. 3500-4500MaH is good, too.
