Question Hp Firewire adapter kicks out wifi adapter.

Hello,

I bought an HP USB/Firewire combo adapter for my notebook, a sony vaio. It installed fine, and even works, USB ports work atleast. But as soon as I plug it into the slot, my wifi connection bottoms out and my mouse starts spazzing out every few seconds. I also noticed that in device manager the HP card comes up as a 1394 network adapter, other than that, there are no other known conflicts in my list. Any thoughts on what this could be?
I'm stumped and I've always thought of myself as moderately pc inclined.:4-don
tkno
And I have XP sp1

There are a few patches regarding USB 2.0 and Firewire in SP2. It is a recommended update. I presume that this is a Cardbus adapter. There could also be power or resource problems. If you can control the computer with the keyboard, make your way over to device manager and look for any yellow exclamation overlays on devices. These indicate conflicts.

-Tried plugging it in while powered off, problems still occur.

-Installed sp2, still no change.

In the past, I've had both ports with devices, (both functioned at the same time, without issues) and nothing like this has ever happened. I checked device manager, didn't find any exclamation marks. I did notice both my network adapter and this HP firewire adapter are on the same IRQ (9). That sounds like a red flag to me, but you'd think it'd pop up as a conflict, it doesn't. No other resources are shared. The option to change the IRQs is grayed out. Ideas?

xp irq problem not an issue, if you've got the OS install disk you could try a Non distructive repair install.

1 - Boot with the Windows XP CD press any to boot XP disk
2 - Boot with the Windows XP CD and at the Setup Screen press Enter
3 - You will be taken to the Windows XP Licensing Agreement. After reading the agreement press F8 to proceed.
4 - The next screen gives you the option to do a fresh (clean) install or to repair the selected Windows XP installation. To run a Repair Install Press "R" at this time.
**Note** if you do not see the option to repair the selected Windows XP installation DO NOT choose the option to continue installing a fresh copy without repairing as that will overwrite your data and cause unrecoverable data loss.

5 - Windows XP will copy the necessary files to your Hard Drive to begin the installation and will then reboot. You will see the message that informs you to "Press any key to boot the CD". Do not press any keys this time just wait a few seconds and the Windows Startup Screen will be displayed. Following this you will be greeted by the Windows XP Setup Screens.
6 - When Setup has completed you should find all of your previously installed apps and settings are intact.

IRQs can share to an extent. That should be no problem at all. Though, you could have a driver conflict. Check Windows Update manually and click driver updates (or words to that effect) on the left. Also, try the manufacturer's site for updated drivers.
