slow booting, black screen.

I was having trouble with with updates, and I recently installed the ThinkVantage Software Update to replace IBM update connector. It found several updates, including new BIOS ones that made my batter last longer actually. But now when I close my laptop lid it like goes into some kind of hybernation, the lights are all on but it stays black. I have it set in advanced power settings to where this should not happen, this problem is new. The computer is still on, and sometimes after I open it back up and move the mouse and push some buttons after an unneccessarily long time it comes back, but a lot of times it doesn't. Also sometimes I will close it again and then open it back up and then it will work, but most times it just stays black.

In addition to that, my computer was hanging after the windows password at a blank blue screen because of OpenAFS client, which I updated. It then was lagging on right clicks, so I disabled the AFS client Shell Extension, this fixed that problem. It's lagging at a different point now, it lags significantly, way too long, at "Loading Personal Lettings" after the windows password. I uninstalled AFS but it's still doing it.

Any ideas?

Hello Judson04, welcome to TSF

O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service (navapsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe (file missing)
Is this the same computer that you posted the HJT log about? If it is, for starters, check task manager > processes tab, and see if "navapsvc.exe" is running. This may be part of the slow boot.

Start>run>type in "msconfig" (no parenthesis), >OK.>under the boot.ini tab, check the "bootlog" box. > OK > restart. After the computer re-starts, look in c:\ and open bootlog.txt (a text file that should list all the startup activity). You may be able to spot what's slowing the boot process down

check event viewer for warnings or info about processes failing to load

Create another user profile. boot up and log into that new profile and see if it loads faster.

Norton is a slow loader to begin with. If a file is missing, it may be timing out

If worse comes to worse, a reinstallation of Windows would do the trick. But before taking any drastic measures, I suggest you get this machine cleaned out. Norton usually does cause slow startup times due to it's resource hungry components. The BIOS update may have reset some settings. Your computer might also be a bad sleeper or hibernator. This sometimes happens when the CPU, chipset or memory (entire FSB) is under too much load. You can disable hibernation in the Power Options control panel as well as disable timers for sleep, etc.

No, that was a friends computer I posted the log for in the other thread.

"check event viewer for warnings or info about processes failing to load"

Can you be more specific? I know how to open event viewer but that's all. I don't really understand what I'm looking at.

I already had it disabled, this problem only started after I ran the BIOS updates. Someone once mentioned to me I may need to update my chipset drivers? I don't really know how to do this. Someone tried to help me but they pointed me to some INTEL files that were not for my chipset, and it wouldn't let me install them. This was on another site though. I'm going to post the bootlog, and HJT log, and would a WinPFind log help at all?

Event viewer:

Click start>administrative tools>event viewer (also in control panel>administrative tools)

Once you’re their, click on the "View Tab"-Add/remove columns-make sure date, time, type, source, category, event columns are visible, newest first,

In left pane, click any entry. In rite pane, rite click any entry, select properties and it will give you an error message or information message. Look for messages pertaining to services or processes not loading, failing to start, or timing out

I seem to get these everytime my computer loads. Any ideas?

The 'ccPwdSvc' service has stopped.

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( IBM Rapid Restore Ultra Service ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started.

The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

IBMs usually use chipsets that don't require drivers. You should also be able to manually download the BIOS update off of Lenovo's site and install it to roll back to the working version.
