Laptop-External sound card

I'm adding Logitech X-530 speakers to daughters Toshiba laptop. Thinking SB0490 external sound card to get in to laptop. Laptop is running XP Pro and the onboard controls only allow volume control. I can not turn down the subwoofer.....it's to loud. Before I buy this setup what can I do to adjust the base? The card along with Creative speakers support the 9-pin din for volume control. Doing this on the cheap and Creative is proud of their speakers....but may have to go with them if it solves the problem.
Really on the learning curve here...no nuthing bout sound...Thanks

If you have the AC97 card you can use the graphic equalizer to turn down the bass. Go into the Control Pannel and Click on Sound Effect Manager. Then click on the Equalizer tab and turn down the bass.
