optical output problem
My laptop hard drive recently died as a result I had to buy a new one and reinstall. The laptop is a few years old now and the company has gone bust so no support. It came with recover disks but no windows disk so i had to buy a new copy and install it. Windows had trouble finding a few of the drivers so I used a program called 'UnknownDevices' to identify the onboard sound and graphics and install what i think may be the appropriate drivers.
The laptop has a line-out socket at the front that will either accept an analog stereo mini-jack or an optical cable. Since the re-install I can't seem to get a digital output. Whenever I play sound or video files I get sound from the laptop speakers. If I connect an analog cable from the line-out to my amp I also get sound. However if I plug the optical cable in I get nothing and the amp doesn't detect a signal. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't with the amp as it was working last week pre re-install. The cable is fine and has been tested on another device. There is something going down the cable as when connected the the laptop red light is coming out of the other end. Any ideas how to fix the problem? or where to begin? |

I'm willing to bet it needs drivers or some sort or utility. We'll need the brand/model.
