Basic AC Adapter question

I bought a Dell Inspiron E1705 notebook and this is the first time I'm handling a notebook, so I have a simple question. Is it safe to plug in the power adapter into my notebook while it's on (using the battery)? And if so, should i plug it into the wall or the computer first? And are there are safety precautions in doing this?

I have one of those adapters that come in two pieces (you plug them into each other).

You can plug/unplug it at any time with no worries.

You can plug it in and unplug it anyway, anyhow, anytime you want.

Ditto. It is also perfectly fine to plug it in when it's on.
