Hmm...I would love to use a program on my wife's laptop...but I can't even get Windows to load. I don't even get to the logon screen. The HD is making some serious noise as soon as you turn the power on. She bought a new computer so this one is just sitting there. I would love to get some use out of it.

Is it a clacking sound that occurs on an interval or just loud operation? Both are bad, but the loud op means you're cooked. The clack means you have a chance. I think you'll just need a new hard drive.

Try this:
Try to boot from your Windows CD-Rom disc. If Windows comes all the way up, use a backup tool to salvage all of your data. I use StompSoft's PC BackUp http://www.stompsoft.com/pc-backup/pc-backup.html I have had a lot of success with that. Believe me I have heard the "click of death" before (that really is the only way to describe it), and I have lost data, which is why I began routinely backing up.

Also, you can try popping the drive in the freezer for a while. Sometimes it will buy you some time.
