My laptop keeps pausing or freezing temporarily

I have suddenly started experiencing a problem with my HP ZE4502 laptop: it seems to pause (or freeze) for about a half of a second, reoccurring about every 5 seconds. It's most noticeable by trying to continuously move the mouse. About every 5 seconds, the cursor will stop moving for about a half second, then resume by trying to catch up to where it should be (which is pretty annoying). It's not just the mouse, though, because I will see the same behavior with the keyboard. For example, if I hold down a key with notepad open, I will see the same pauses in the printing of the characters.

Does anyone have any ideas about what might be going on? Thanks!

Hi,
Have you installed anything since or any drivers? I found with a wireless card in a computer before, when enabled, it freazes up the system.

How much does the HDD load while this happens?

It could also be a video card issue. Be sure you have the latest drivers.
