Toshiba M55 DVD Burner

The DVD Burner on a Toshiba M55-S135 will not burn DVD's. It will burn a CD with no problem. When the laptop was purchased it came with XP-Home, and was upgraded to XP-Pro. Since then when ever you try to burn a DVD it will take you through the entire process only to say at the end that it will not burn a DVD . I have tried several different programs. Is it possible that something doesnt see the drive as a DVD burner, which was probably caused by installing XP-Pro?
