Need a laptop
I am trying to determine which laptop to get.
I only need it for some simple browsing and dvd/cd burning. Someone is trying to sell me an older Sony Vaio R505EC for $600 the dvd rom does not work but he is offering an external dvd rw. http://www99.shopping.com/xPF-Sony_...EC_PCG_R505ECK1 I am also loking at this laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16834115256 Any suggestions? Thank you |

Hi,
None of the links work, so I googled the Sony Vaio R505EC, and couldn't find any specs, just batterys and memory upgrades. Please could you post working links. Anyway, if you are just wanting it for DVD and CD burning, then you wouldn't need much, though a fair amount of memory would be useful. Maybe 512MB or even 1GB. But, you can always easily upgrade this. Something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834115256 would be good for that. It has a good spec for the price. |

Acer laptop
Joefireline,
thanks for the reply. Sorry about the links????? The link you gave me is one that I was trying to give!! I was comparing that ACER from Newegg to the Vaio. here's another link of the sony: http://www.shopcol.com/sonyr505ec.html It looks like the Acer has a 1.8ghz cpu and the sony only a 1.2ghz.. Thanks again for the reply! Cheers, Cliffhucker |

I would 100% go for the Acer. The Sony one isn't very good spec, and you can't upgrade the ram much. The Acer has the better specs by far. You'll also save $4!

I paid under $500 for a P3 IBM with everything working. $600 for a gimped Sony is a ripoff.

I think Sony is a ripoff in general.
Acers are an extreme bargain, especially if you're looking in the desktop replacement category. Dell has some good offers, some of which are worth looking at, but I don't know. If the price was right, I would go for them, but Dell just isn't what it used to be. Same thing with toshiba- I used to love their laptops, but recently their customer service has started to suck, and their machines are getting overpriced. If you really want a quality notebook, check out the Acer Aspire 5672WLMi at newegg- it's on sale for 1069 and has a Core Duo 1.66 processor, 1GB of ram, a 120GB hard drive, and Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics. A really awesome machine. I've had one for the past month or so, and I'm quite pleased with it. The only thing I would watch out for is the fact that it tends to put out a ton of heat, as is the case with most high-performance laptops. Other than that, its only weak points are that it comes with very little bundled software, no OS CD, and the HD is split into two 60GB FAT32 partitions.
