xp recovery

I'm trying to clean my hard drive and start fresh. I've done this before but can't remember how. The computer didn't come with operating system disc, it was preloaded, xp home edition. Can anyone shed some light on the situation? Thanks

What is the make/model of your computer? Some systems have their recovery software installed on a seperate partition.

Thanks! It's a Dell, inspiron laptop about 4-5 years old.

Newer Dell computers come with the recovery on a partition on the drive. If you have this there should be some indication when you boot the computer. Ive seen www.dell.com flash at the top middle of the screen where at this point you must hit the Ctrl F11 key to activate this. Are you seeing anything at boot, any key combination?
