Third party boot device help please
HI
I have a Sony PCG-FX190K laptop, and the CD-ROM drive does not work. I have to do a re installation of the operating system (W2K). The following is taken from the Sony Troubleshooting Site: HTML Code:
Can I perform a third-party recovery on my VAIO with a USB external CD-ROM drive? Solution: NOTE: A third-party recovery is when you use a non Sony VAIO CD-ROM drive to reset your VAIO back to the factory default settings using the product recovery CD that was supplied with your VAIO. This is not possible as the recovery is done in DOS and DOS does not support USB. You will need to use a CD-ROM drive connected via a PCCARD (PCMCIA) in order to perform a recovery on your VAIO. My problem is that it is not recognised in the BIOS, so therefore i can not boot from it. I spoke to Sony tech support, and they do not no anything about this info on there own site! Can anybody here help with this please. Thanks |

Assuming you have a floppy drive, you can make boot floppiesthat include the drivers for your external rom. If you have a win2k disk rather than a restore disk, you can make the disks from that rather than download them

What was the problem, with the floppies?
The drive itself is not to be recognized by bios, as it is cardbus. Did you try booting from it at all though?
