Disk eject problems
I have a Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop with Windows XP. Just recently out of the blue the drive stop ejecting. The button on the drive nor the selecting "eject" from right-clicking the drive works. However, the manual eject button does work. Thank you if anyone can help me.

What kind of drive is it? Does it only do this with certain kinds of optical media? Also, does ti always do this or does it sometimes do this? And does it work before you boot into windows?
Try updating the driver. Reinstall the old one first, then go to dells website, you should be able to get it there.

The drive is a Sony DVD+-RW DW-D56A. Another question I had was it appears that I have either lost the disk with the drivers on it or never had one. SO, if I uninstall the driver can I use the one I dl'ed off of the Dell site to reinstall with? And if yes, how do I go about doing that? Thanks.

Since you can detect it in My Computer, it is still active and this is not a driver issue. I think it is a mechanical issue. My best guess would be the servo to electrically release the holding mechanism has broken. For more details:
1. Does the drive's light blink/Does the drive work when you insert a CD after the manual eject? 2. Is the device user replaceable? (ie. swappable drive) Pressing the button would have nothing to do with a driver, as it is a command to activate the servo. In Linux however, the CD will not eject until it is unmounted or ejected via software. Windows does not exhibit this behavior |

Your problem is the servo. It has somehow fried. I doubt it can be easily fixed. Purchase a new one from Impact Computers. What Brand and Model is your laptop; I will find the parts for you. If not, www.impactcomputers is the URL for them...

Thanks alot, the more I look at the problem the more I think you are right. When I hit the button it starts to work (makes a whizzing sound), but then stops abruptly and the blinking stops. Thanks again and If you could get me a part number it would be greatly appreciated.

Well, drives themselves often are hard to disassemble and use many proprietary parts that are hard, if not impossible to find. Give me you PC's information and I will post a link to Impact's parts list, if you like.

A servo is a small piece of electronic equiptment that responds to a signal. When they do receive that signal, they move. In this case, the servo pushes the eject mechanism, which basically does the job of manual eject. If it is broken, it will not be pressing the mechanism, ergo not ejecting electronically.
Impact has your DVD Burner, but it is costly. http://www.impactcomputers.com/t3013.html There are other drives like CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD-RW/DVD-ROM, and DVD+RW drives. The DVD+/-RW is the most expensive. Those are here: http://www.impactcomputers.com/dellp...s-storage.html |
