Mouse freezing during start up

Having an issue with my compaq 2105CA laptop. The mouse and comptuer freeze up during start up mode while on the battery pack only. Works when the power cord is plugged in. Have installed a new battery and reformatted the the laptop with no luck.

Freezing as in crashing or just for how long??

just freezing, not being able to move the mouse to execute.

How long does it freez for and is it the touchpad that you are on about? If it is a touchpad, does an external mouse work when it freezes?
My touchpad can sometimes freez a bit when the HDD is being used lots.
It might be freezing only when using the battary because of power settings.

Freezes indefinitely, nothing works not even plugging in a mouse at that point. Last attempt I let it go on for a few hours.

Is the HHD on a lot? Is it quite hot? Try opening the laptop, and clean off any dust, try using a can of air for this.

check your device manager for any yellow conflict alerts
click the view tab in the device manager, then click on "show hidden devices"

are there any conflicts?

If it is only on the battery, there is deffinitely a power problem. Many batteries exhibit power problems in the form of not being able to feed enough power to the system. It can be costly, but if you buy a new battery and it works, there's your problem.
