Screen problem

Hi

I am new to this but really need your help. My laptop is about 18 months old and has always worked fine. Last week I plugged a broadband moden into it through a Ethernet cable and set up broadband. A couple of minuites after doing this when I looked at the screen again, it had gone all white with vertical coloured lines down it. I have rebooted the machine etc and that is all I ever get now. As soon as I switch on, it just goes straight to white with these vertical coloured lines. I have tried connecting a external monitor to it and that works fine. The laptop is a Toshiba Equium A60. I am worried that the screen has blown, is it possible for a surge or something like that to come down the Ethernet cable and blow the screen ?

Hi, and welcome to TSF!
This is strange, I doubt the ethernet cable could have carried a surge since it does not carry power, and even if it did, it couldn't get transfered into the monitor. I think its just a coincidence. If all the monitor ever shows is the image you are describing but an external display works, then its definatley a display problem. You could use an external monitor, but I would contact the manufacturer for help.

If your system is still under warranty, use it to get a nice free screen. Depending on your brand and model, www.impactcomputers.com may have a screen for your computer. An ethernet cable does not carry power and cannot harm the display. You could always tell the story to your friends then offer them your "haunted ethernet cable of death"
