CD Drive not working

I havnt done anything to the hardware, and cant even think of any new software I have loaded lately, but the CD Drive on my Laptop isnt working anymore.

It opens up, and when the CD goes in, it makes all the usual noises like it would work, but thats as far as it goes. I have tried a few different CD's, obviously, and I just have no idea what to do.

Any help is really appreciated.

Hi and welcome to TSF,

Are you showing any conflicts in device manager?-Rite cliock on My Computer, click on properties, select the hardware tab. Look at all devices for yellow exclamation marks. There will be + boxes next to many devices. Click on the + box for dvd/cd-rom devices as well as the entry for ide ATA/ATAPI controllers for specific info

If there are no conflicts, highlight your drive, rite click, select properties-under the general tab check that the device is enabled (at bottom of box). Under the driver tab, check that the driver is from microsoft. If it is, you can click un-install. The driver will be deleted and automatically replaced when you reboot the computer.

It's possible you may just need to use a cd cleaner

There is a exclamation mark next to the cd-drive.
Device status: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

First, try un-installing the driver in device manager by highlighting the drive, rite clicking and select un-install as stated earlier. When you reboot, the driver will be replaced automatically.

If the exclamation is still there, see this registry edit to correct the the problem. Code 39.

Be certain to BACKUP the registry. Regedit is not difficult, don't be afraid of it, but never edit it without backing up first

ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY

Oi. That would fix it. And yes, always back that registry up...
