Defrag and check how much free space is available on the slave.
Are both hard drives on the same IDE cable, or is the slave on the same cable as a CD/DVD drive?

Check the drive’s transfer mode
Start>rite click “my computer”>properties>hardware>device manager>expand “ide controllers”>rite click “primary ide channel”>properties>advanced settings Transfer mode should be DMA, not PIO |

once you have verified HWM's info: if that does not correct your situtation
then download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility (free) from their website and run the full diagnostic test (floppy version in my fav choice) to check the drive maechanical health. post back your test results or other solutions found

Yes, both are running on the same Primary IDE channel.
I set bothe to DMA mode, but seems like the primary is running on ULTRA DMA Mode 5 while the slave drive is running in PIO mode. How to change the settings? have to change the cable or something? |

It should be an easy fix. Follow above steps. After rite clicking primary ide channel, select “uninstall”, instead of properties, and reboot. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.
Windows keeps track of all timeout/crc errors. After six errors, windows reduces the transfer mode to a slower mode-PIO being the slowest possible. Re-installing the driver resets the counter and make dma available again. The issue is most prevalent with cd/dvd-rom drives but it does happen with hdds as well. As Linderman said, download the diagnostics for your drive. The issue doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem with the drive, but you should check it just in case |
