western digital raptor

im buying 2 new harddrives.
is it worth buying a 74 gig raptor for my OS and apps or should i just go with a larger compacity 7000rpm hard drive for a fraction of the cost

the second hard drive for files will be a large 7000rpm ( 300 gigs probably )

The Raptor is one hellva drive without a doubt; however if you dont have a system that is a real screamer bring held back by nothing >>> then it probally wont be worth the investment for you.

A Seagate or WD 7200 rpm SATA drive would be a great drive for a budget minded solution; most of the guys that use the raptors want the ultimate performance from their system as their first priority and cost comes second.

I have found that most computer users/buyers that are budget minded arent as impressed with the raptor after buying. aka buyers remorse

With the prices the way they are, I wouldn't go less than a 250GB. You can get a quality 250GB HD for about $110.

I don't see quality from Seagate anymore... WD all the way.

you can buy 120 gig drives on ebay for about $50.00 to $55.00 new I would rather have two 120's than a single 250 (data redundancy)

Hi,

Just to chime in, I agree with linderman on the size issues. I would prefer to spend less money per drive and have more drives. That way, (I do that in my system) it is so easy to make an exact clone and if something tanks, you have a perfect fit.

I also agree that you need to look at straight Sata drives for your budget. While the Raptor's are excellent, unless you are splitting ant hairs, you won't be less impressed with a good straight Sata or Sata II. Either will do the job for you.
