Mistake Dell Slave Hard Drive Problem

I hate a Dell Demension 8400 and I hate 2 160 hard drives. One is the primary, and I put in a new hard drive, and I went into bios and it was hard drive 1 (out of 0,1,2,3,4,5,6). Then I try to restart and there is just a black screen and nothing happends. Whats wrong? Did I install it right? I hate very important data on that hard drive and I don't want to loose it.

Hi,

I am sorry, but am still not clear on your problem. Do I understand that you just put in another hard drive and it does not work at all? Can you boot up if you take it out? Is it on the same ide cable as the original drive? Is the same drive in there to boot from that you originally had in there and now it does not boot? I just don't understand totally what is going on because your setup needs a little clearer explanation.

After you get us through the items above, then tell us what type of hard drives (sata or ide), what brand names, what IDE connection they are on, how they are jumpered, and last, where are they on the ribbon cable. I hope you do realize that if you added a new drive, they come standard (if ide) from the factory as cable select, so if you put it on a ribbon cable with an existing drive that is set to Master, no workieeeee.

Post back with answers, questions, or concerns.

as tumbleweed says
pull out the hard drive you put in
pop the battery out for 20 minutes to reset the cmos
make sure you did not loosen any ribbon cables.. on the main board, hard drive, rom.ect.

try and get back to ground zero and get your system up and running.
when that is achieved, post back and we will give you instructions on how to install the second hard drive.

good luck
