Primary IDE master dissapears

Hi there,
Im seeting up a new system, and I have a problem when the system reboots. My primary hard disk (master on the primary IDE) is not being recognized. If I turn off the power and power up again there is not problem. The behaviour of the system is consistent - on every reboot w/o power down it fails (not detected), on every reboot after the power has been switched off it works.

I have disabled SATA support in the bios as I do not have any SATA drives. I am using the factory bios (no upgrade) and I have not yet installed any drivers that cam with the mb.

EDIT: Bios version is AMIBIOS Version 0506, Date 11/17/05

The HDDs and the DVD is from my old rig, there they ran without any problems.

Board: ASUS A8N-VM CSM
CPU: Athlon64 3700+ box
Ram: 2x512 GB Kingston DDR PC3200
Primary HDD: Maxtor DiamonMax 10 200GB IDE
Sec HDD (on primary IDE): IBM 40 GB
DVD RW: NEC 2500A (Seconday IDE)

Any clues ?

Thanks !

Make sure the master/slave jumpers on the drives are set properly.
Check the clear CMOS jumper on the motherboard to make sure
it is in the run or normal position.

Thanks leroys1000,
Did that already and it is OK. I changed the HHDs so now my IBM is the master and the Maxtor the slave. I also changed the physical sequence on the EDI bus so the master is the last drive on the bus.

The IBM works fine and after installing xp my system runs fine. Had a few forced chkdsk on the Maxtor with orphan file recovery.

Guess the Maxtor has had its days , or....?
