Is it possible to swap media to recover data from dead HD?

My Maxtor diamondmax 9 160 G sata drive died, taking with it over a year of pics, files, etc. Attempts at data recovery have failed so far. I was thinking of buying an identical drive, taking it apart and swapping the media, since the problem is likely with the board or motor. I know this is dicey at best and should be done in a clean room but I need to try something to recover those files. Any advice?
