I installed the new hard drive...
and as you can see it's working. However, it's a 200 gig and it's only showing 111 gigs. Also, it does not see the slave drive. It is XP Home. Also, the mouse isn't scrolling smoothly and I made sure smooth scrolling was checked. I did a fresh install without cloning. Set the jumpers the way the old drive was set. What next?

It looks as if I really screwed it up. Checked disk management, and it appears as if the former slave drive is now the master, as the new drive doesn't show up. That means all the data that was on there is gone, because that is the one on which the operating system is now installed. I don't suppose there is any way to retrieve any data? OK, how do I straighten this out? Since the data is most likely lost from the former slave, how would I turn the new drive into the slave? Where would I put the jumpers? Do the cables need to be connected differently?

I would set the new drive as master and the old drive as slave and reinstall the OS in this case. Or else you will have to install the newone as slave. Slave on the ribbon - the second one - and slave jumper setting. If you set one slave you have to set the other master. Dont you have little diagrams on the drive about the jumper settings ? |

I put the jumper in the same place as it was on the drive I replaced. That is supposed to be the master, at least according to the instruction booklet. Went to Seagate's site and the instructions said to put the jumper on different pins. If I remove the drive, and put the jumper where it should go, and start the reinstall again, will I end up with two operating sysems?

I was so disgusted with what happened, I went to a club last night and had a couple.
This afternoon, I think I will remove the new hard drive and reset the jumper. Reinstall XP and see what happens. I still don't want XP on the slave, so how to get rid of it? |

is your 200GB drive a Seagate type? I just installed a 200GB Seagate hard drive as Primary Slave for use as a storage drive while my Primary Master is a 28.6GB drive used as a boot drive, my Seagate drive reads 186GB as well, can someone please explain why it's not reading the full 200GB with nothing stored in the drive itself? thanks |

I was told in another forum by several people that when the drive is formatted and partitioned then the size of the drive is correct in that it should be around 186GB, which my drive was formatted and partitioned, so it is correct then

HDD size is sold by total space of which some is used for drive firmware and indexing to put it simply.
