installing a new HDD, having trouble
My 40Gb EIDE drive failed. I purchased new 40Gb WD EIDE drive, but I am unable to load XP. When trying to reload from my Dell XP disk I get the error - "file setupdd.sys could not be loaded. error code is 14". I have no idea what to do to reload/initialize this new HDD. I have all my original Dell CDs to reload applications, but don't know how to fix this. Please help..

So you are saying that I need to format this new HDD. Ok, I am almost clueless on this. I can go to Western Digital web site and download the necessary software to format the drive, but do I assume that I format this to FAT 32 ? Is there any special way I need to format this? Thanks for the help...

is the new hard drive pinned as master or cable select? make it the same as your old one.
the dell restore disks should be fomatting the drive themselves.. before trying to load the operating system. generally, ntsf is the the format to use. but let the hard drive's utility format it first, then try the restore disks again. post back |

The new drive is pinned as a master (and that is what I want). When I purchased this new drive (over the internet), it came without any instructions or information. I guess it is OEM. All I have is the new HDD. So I installed it, rebooted my computer with my Dell XP reinstallation CD, and it entered me into the Windows Setup screen. (I am thinking I am home free), but then after it reads the disk for about 5 seconds I get this error that "setupdd.sys could not be loaded. error code is 14". You suggested that I need to format the disk, and use the "Z fill", but I don't know what that is. I went to "www.westerndigital.com", and I can't find any software for reformatting the disk. I don't understand why the Dell reinstallation disk is not reformatting the disk for me?? Any other suggestions?

Hi,
Important Note: If you have a Western Digital drive alone on a ribbon cable, take off ALL jumpers and place it on the END of the ribbon cable. That is the only way they will work if alone on that cable. This is different than most drives. I don't know if this is the case, but wanted to pass that along to you. That setup allows it to be a master while alone. Of course, if another drive is on that ribbon cable, then the master jumper setting is what is needed.
