Calling all Super Technicians!! HDD not found
Hey how are you guys.
Ive been forum jumping for a while and this one is quality! Anyways, i have a problem with my new 200GB HDD. Im connecting it via IDE. When i boot my system (Brand new built from scratch) i get to XP setup and it gets right to the "Press enter to install Windows" and apon enter says there were no HDD found, setup must exit. Now i know what your all thinking, Jumpers, Cables and Bad sectors. Unfortunatley, its none of them. I have tested a different HDD that was takin out of a working computer. I have tried swapping between All 3 IDE slots, Then All 3 Slots using one ribbon (66/100/133) and have turned up nothing. (I am only trying to run a DVD Burner and the 200gb HDD on my board) In my BIOS/CMOS i can see the drive info (Samsung *serial numba* 200Gb) as a master, and i even see it acknowledge it apon startup, but the same thing occurs Just as im about to Install Windows. Im going nuts, If anyone has anyideas, it would be much appreciated. Thanx for your time -- Rusty Last edited by Rusty_Russ; 03-09-2006 at 05:30 AM. |

It is possible windows does not have compatable drivers for your
IDE controller. Check your motherboard CD for an IDE driver and copy the .inf and .sys file to a floppy disk. Boot to the windows CD and press f6 when prompted. Then load the drivers from the floppy when prompted.

Well, that didnt work. I cant press F6 when Windows starts to install. It says, Press F6 to install Raid drivers, and then Press F2 to start automated system recovery. I continually press F6 the whole time but nothing happins, but if i press F2 when asked it goes into system recovery. Its not the keyboard cuz ive tried three different ones. ???? This is crazy.

Hi Rusty,
When it asks for the special driver, only tap F6 for one time and then wait. It will later on (after continuing to load) stop and ask for you to load the special drivers. At that time, you install the drivers you have. You may be doing that, but from your post, I thought it said you held it down.

Hi,
You have done most things on this, so now grasping at straws so forgive for duplicate things that you have covered. Just thinking out loud and trying to help. Is your hard drive area in the BIOS set to AUTO? If this is alone on your ribbon cable, I assume you have the jumpers set to master and have it placed on the END of the ribbon cable, is that correct? Remember, darn things come from the factory as CS and some times, that is not the best option. Are you certain that the cable you are using (I assume so, but thought I would ask) is an 80 connector cable and not one of the old 40 connector cables? On newer boards, you have to set the hard drive boot priority and then the boot order....have you done that with: CDRom - 1st Floppy - 2nd Hard Drive - Last Have you tried to boot from the drive manufacturer's utility that can be found here: http://tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 Will keep thinking out loud and post back later....pizza is waiting!

Yea, thats all good, i know what you mean about grasping straws. I used to be able to see my other two IDE slots in BIOS and now i can only see the main (IDE1). ??? 80pin Cables are fine, Master jumper is set on HDD, no idea?

Yea ive bin trying that too, everytime i change something, i try with it enabled then i try it without. Also it gives me the option of pressing <TAB> just before it shows the bios table, to setup a raid , but i dont have an identical drive, and aamnot looking to setup one anyways.

Rusty,
What the heck motherboard are you dealing with, or is it posted and I missed it somehow? This is an IDE drive, isn't it? There has to be a reason unless the drive is bad.

Hey gang,
Id like sum help to do with a brand new system and installing windows xp. First things first i gotta give you a run down cuz im getting the same comments back from everyone... - Jumper on HDD is set to Master. - Cable is 80pin 66/100/133, and is connected correctly - For every change, boot was tested with and without RAID enabled (Even though im not using a RAID configuration) - New HDD is not the problem as a different, working HDD was also tried. Sory bout that, heres my problem, i can boot all the way upto the screen that says, "Press enter to install Windows XP, and apon hitting enter it says, no HDD can be found, setup must exit.??? i reset the bios and am wondering if i loose any sort of driver/BIOS information in doing so. Ive tried updating the bios, but in doing so it asked for a 4mb BIOS (size error). My mother board is a 8i915PL-G (Gigabyte). I have all the drivers from their site but am a bit confused on how to apply them. Other than that im blank, Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanx fo your time.

Hi Rusty,
Still looking. Hey, I read the manual on your board...looks like a very excellent board. I was impressed. Back to the issue: Make sure the hard drive (IDE) is put in the first IDE slot as described in your manual. (non-raid slot) If you have not cleared CMOS, then do that and set the board back to defaults. Then, make sure these items in the BIOS setup menu are set up correctly: IDE Channel - Set to Auto Access Mode - Set to Large/Auto (if that does not do the job, try the other ones in that sequence. The manual was not very clear on this and that area might be where we are missing something. ADVANCED AREA Hard Disk Boot Device - Check to see if your Hard Drive is listed in that area. On Chip SATA Mode - Not using Sata, disable this feature Pata IDE - Channel I Master/Slave (that is another one you might play with if this setup does not work) Onboard Hardware Raid - Disabled Save these changes if you made any....try it and see what happens.

Allright, i have...
The 200gb HDD connected to the Mobo Via IDE1 (Main), and the Hard drive is registering in BIOS/CMOS. I can see all its specifications. And my CD/DVD is connected via IDE2. I had them the other way because i thought IDE1 didnt support 133Mb P/S which is what my HDD is. But now it wont boot from cd like the drive isnt even there. Which is what it was doing with the HDD. It seems like IDE2&3 arent working. So i tried the HDD and the CD/DVD on the same cable, HDD being the master, then asthe slave (changing the jumper to compensate) and it still dosent pick up the CD/DVD. I have also tried the CD in IDE3 just to be sure its not just one faulty IDE slot. Each time i boot now it just stays at the DOS table with all my Drive and other info. And under primary master disk (which is now the HDD) it says; LBA,ATA 100, 200GB' Which i assume means that the IDE1 does only support 100mb P/S.

STOP! I cleared the BIOS (again) Loaded optimized defaults, turned off SATA, turned off RAID, and used the cable configuration of the HDD as the slave, and it started working? This is really weird because i had tried this on one or more occasions allready. Ah well its working now.
You guys have been a great help and i look forward to being apart of this forum. I would also like to make a donation for your efforts. As i said before i had been forum jumping trying to find people with a bit of decency and knowledge. And all i was getting was arogant nerds telling me things instead of asking. Anyways thats that doing, Thankyou again Dudes. Really appreciated.
