HDD not recognised...
My second HDD has stopped being recognised, it has been making some funny sounds latley and I think it's died. Is there any way to recover the date on there?
I've heard putting it in the fridge/freezer can help...?? |

Hi,
There are some times when a drive makes a noise that indicates that metal is touching metal, putting it in a bag in a freezer for about twenty minutes or so can make it work for a while until it warms up again. What happens is that the metal will contract and the arm inside will move until it expands and scrapes again. Move it from the freezer to the computer quickly and then do that same thing a couple of times until you get your data. What the heck can you lose by trying that. I have done that with more than one drive and retreived data from them. If it works in my shop, it can work for you in specific cases. It is not 100 percent sure and probably not even 25 percent sure, but it does work at times. Worth a shot in severe cases. However, why not download the utility for your drive first and see if there is something that the utility might be able to find and repair. All drive manufacturer's utilities can be found at this link: http://tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 There are also other causes for a drive to die. You can have a virus, you can have a cable go bad, the ribbon cable connection can come loose...you just need to explore all those options to retreive your data.
