Mistake bios cant see my hdd

I got a used computer from someone. the hard drive is completly wiped. no cd drive. so i got a OLD cd dirve from a friend. bios could see the cd drive and the hdd both at first. then before i install xp, all a sudden the bios cant see the hdd! tried every conceivable jumper settings, and I kinda narrowed it down to the fact that the hdd isn't getting power. tried another hdd, same thing. tired of rackin my brain, i just wanna play quake 4 and geek out on city of heros
ANY help would be very useful and appreciated.
Cheers, Brian.

First of you said the drive may not be getting any power, I'd try to use a different power cable and see if that makes a difference. An if it does power up try removing the jumper and see if that works.

Tried that

I tried using different ide cables, power cables. even tried removing the jumper completly. this might help to remedy my prob, I bought a copy of xp, but i didn't relize the one i bought was the upgrade version. so i have a clean hdd, and needed a copy of 98/2000 or any other previous version. so i got a copy of 98 se, 2000, 2000 server, and i think when i tried the ME version, that's when i couldn't see my hdd...really frustrated....thnks for the help!
