Transfer hard drive data to external hard drive

Hi,

I am doing a system restoration on my computer. Before doing so I bought a Maxtor external drive to transfer information over to it, so I don't lose any data. If someone could give a detailed procedure to do this I would be most grateful. I am running windows ME.

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Basically, you connect the external drive, make sure it is reconized in My Computer. If you are transferring say files/folders from My Documents folder, you open My Documents folder and select the files you want to transfer over. You can left click once on a folder and hold down the Ctrl key and left click any other folder/file you want. Thus multiple folders are highlighted. Right click and select copy. Once you have the files selected go to your external drive in My Computer and right click and select paste.
If your computer savy and know how to have two windows tiled vertically you can drag and drop right over to the external drive.

I hope this has helped

Hi TJ,

I have connected the external hard drive to the USB port but it does not show up in My Computer. It went through the process of looking for new hardware and locating drivers and there is an icon on the task bar showing the Maxtor is installed.I tried to use Nero to copy the files but it did not show the Maxtor external drive. What am I doing wrong?

My System

Send a message via MSN to linderman
no problem >>>> you just arent done setting yup your drive yet !!

you must partition first (even if you only want one big drive you still need a partition) and then you will need to format the drive !!

then it will be ready to be seen and accessed from within my computer

follow this:
