New hard drive, Windows won't load

I just purchased a Seagate 300 Gig ATA hard drive. I replaced one of my current drives with it, ran the setup util and it rebooted while formatting it. So I ran it again, and it formatted with no problems. Now, whenever I boot, the Windows loading screen just hangs - the animation works, but it doesn't progress any further than that. I can boot in safe mode, and the drive is there, all "300" gigs. But regular booting doesn't work. I ran the diagnostic program in dos and one of the tests came back with an error (I don't have a floppy drive so I can't save it). I replaced the new HD with my old one, and everything is working now. What can I do to fix this? Should I do a repair install of XP?

On a separate, yet somewhat related note, periodically Windows will hang at that same spot, usually after I install a piece of software. When this happens, I select "last good config" and it boots regularly. Is this related?

I would zero fill the drive (wipe & erase) to be sure the hick-up you are having doesnt come back to haunt you !

Use dban boot & nuke in my signature (free) you will need to download the CD disk version

after you will need to change your bios boot order to boot from cd-rom drive as first boot option >>>> then boot from the dban CD >>>> once the dban console is open and running >>>> coose the "enter" command in there >>> then wipe all partiions and logical drives you may have created ????? or you your drive was just one big drive letter you can choose auto nuke from the main console.

this process is a slow one >>>> it takes about 45 minutes to do 32 gigs >>>> so it may take as long as 10 hours to wipe and erase your drive / after which you will begin from scratch just like when you opened the hard drive box and removed the drive from the packaging >>>> the drive will then be in the exact same state.

Update: I put the drive back in. First boot, it got past the loading screen, but then suddenly rebooted. The second time, it hung at the boot screen and I manually rebooted with the thinking that I would try to zero-fill it. The CD didn't load on the 3rd reboot for some reason, but Windows loaded fine. Once everything loaded up, I went into explorer and accessed the new drive. I got a pop-up saying "Windows recovered from a serious error", but the drive is there. I'll zero-fill it just to make sure, but something doesn't seem right.

OK - done wiping it. I got another "Windows recovered from a serious error" popup and the web page came up with this:

the two things that come to mind right away are memory errors or driver issues.

first step >>>> evaluate the memory performance
in my signature there is a free memory testing utility called Memtest 86 dont know if they have a CD version ??????? you may well find yourself needing to buy a floppy drive (cheap) I for one couldnt live without a floppy drive

second step: driver conflict

what devices are you loading drivers for after the windows install ????????

I just got home from work and discovered that the computer rebooted sometime during the day and was stuck on the boot screen. I rebooted, using last known working config, and would get to the login screen. I clicked on my name and windows would start to load - after about 60 seconds or so, XP would reboot without warning.

I had a very similar problem when I installed a 120 gig GD about a year ago on a different computer. It would reboot without warning, but once I formatted the HD with FAT32 instead of NTFS, it would be okay and I haven't had a problem since then.

I'll take the HD out and try that program and post back. Thanks.

I strongly uerge you not to format that 300 gig drive with FAT 32 >>>> you cant get a stable drive any bigger than 137 gig with Fat32 !!!!!

If I could make one suggestion, http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ this has memtest86 on it, if you download it and make the cd you can boot from it to run memtest.

I'll try Memtest (I've used it before), but something tells me it's not the memory.

As far as the MB drivers are concerned, I have an ASUS-E-SE. The menu on the utils CD for some reason won't display right for some reason (it has the tabs at the top, but the rest is blank). Anyway, there doesn't seem to be generic drivers available to update. They are:

VIA 4 in 1 drivers
VIA IDE RAID controller driver
Make VIA 6420 driver disk
PCI Marvell yukon gigabit ethernet driver
ALC850 audio driver
USB 2.0 driver

Any of that look pertinent?

I replaced one of my current drives with it, ran the setup util and it rebooted while formatting it. So I ran it again, and it formatted with no problems. Now, whenever I boot, the Windows loading screen just hangs - the animation works, but it doesn't progress any further than that. I can boot in safe mode, and the drive is there, all "300" gigs. But regular booting doesn't work. I ran the diagnostic program in dos and one of the tests came back with an error (I don't have a floppy drive so I can't save it). I replaced the new HD with my old one, and everything is working now. What can I do to fix this? Should I do a repair install of XP? On a separate, yet somewhat related note, periodically Windows will hang at that same spot, usually after I install a piece of software. When this happens, I select "last good config" and it boots regularly. Is this related?

The second time, it hung at the boot screen and I manually rebooted with the thinking that I would try to zero-fill it. The CD didn't load on the 3rd reboot for some reason, but Windows loaded fine. Once everything loaded up, I went into explorer and accessed the new drive. I got a pop-up saying "Windows recovered from a serious error", but the drive is there. I'll zero-fill it just to make sure, but something doesn't seem right.

gord Registered User Join Date: Apr 2005 Posts: 183 OS: Vista	I just got home from work and discovered that the computer rebooted sometime during the day and was stuck on the boot screen. I rebooted, using last known working config, and would get to the login screen. I clicked on my name and windows would start to load - after about 60 seconds or so, XP would reboot without warning. I had a very similar problem when I installed a 120 gig GD about a year ago on a different computer. It would reboot without warning, but once I formatted the HD with FAT32 instead of NTFS, it would be okay and I haven't had a problem since then. I'll take the HD out and try that program and post back. Thanks.
