HDD Stops Formatting after 1%
I started working on a computer, its a Celeron with 1.3 mhz, 256 mb, with a 30gig hardrive, running windows xp. So I reboot the computer with a startup disk win98, and a cd win98 OS. I went to Fdisk and erase both partitions, I notice the second was a NTFS. Anyways I erase everything and created a new partition with all the available space. Then I went to format the C drive and it starts but stops at 1%. To me it seems something is corrupted but I'm not sure. I just want to format and install windows xp again. Can someone please give me a hand on this/ Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I need some more clarity. Do you have a regular copy of XP or just the restore disks? Also, you mentioned you wanted to Fdisk the drive, does this mean you plan on putting Fat32 back instead of NTFS? If you have a regular Operating Disk with WinXP on it and want to use NTFs, then you need to: Set your boot order in the BIOS setup menu to: CDRom - 1st Floppy - 2nd Hard Drive you want to boot from - 3rd Don't forget to save before you exit. Put the WinXP disk in the CDRom and when it comes up, it will partition and format the drive with very simple instructions. Then, you can put the OS on the disk. If you want to put Fat32 on the disk (I don't recommend this), then use the startup disk and when it comes up type Fdisk, then delete all partitons, create a partition, activate a partition, shut down, reboot and type format and let it do it's job....when done, reboot, and when it comes up. select with CDRom support......then, put the CD disk in the CDRom and type setup, enter and away it should go........that should get it partitioned and formatted in FAt 32 and have your OS start to load.. Post back with questions or concerns.

it would be a prudent idea to zero fill (wipe/erase) the drive prior to the OS install
there is a free program in my siganture named Boot & nuke >>> download the floppy version >>>> it will make a bootable floppy disk utility that when booted with the floppy in the drive yoiu will then come to a command console >>> select AUTO NUKE from the options >>>>> after its dont wiping the hard drive clean you shouldnt get any more hang-ups tumbleweed36 also posted from very good info above to follow dont hesitate to ask more questions regards joe

you wont need a recovery disks if you have a windows XP install disk >>>> thats all you will need after the zero filling >>>>> you will just boot your computer from that disk and choose the install options

I had a similar problem just this evening except I get the dreaded "NLTDR is missing" message after my first format failed at 15%. Everything is connected properly and I'm booting from my CD/DVD Burner with a Windos XP CD. The DVD is listed as first in the boot sequence but reading the other replies, I don't believe my floppy is listed as second, hard drive might be second. Should I try and install anyway with this NLTDR message that appears? Does it matter if the BIOS has the hard drive as Primary Master and the DVD drive as Secondary Master?
For clarity, I'm installing a completely new drive (120 GB ATA 100 IDE) and there are no other drives connected to the motherboard, just two other dvd burners. Would be grateful for any help, this is quite infuriating. Last edited by Imaginator : 01-10-2006 at 07:09 PM. |

We would really like to give you assistance, but you need to copy this information in a new thread so you get personal help. It is so hard (at least for us old guys, cough) to keep two or three problems straight in a single thread. Oh, I felt you did a nice job of explaining your situation, so post it and one of us will try to give you assistance. I don't know how long I would be around tonight (is getting late here after a long day), but would like to have you send me a link to your thread if you post a new one. When i am on, will try to take a look at your problem. Have a great evening. In the meantime, start over, change the boot order and see what happens. Here is some more help to take a look at: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm Post a new thread if you don't get this solved and if you do, please PM me so I know you have it taken care of.

HI,
So glad you got it up and going. Tell you what, when linderman and I take on a project, darn, we usually get it going one way or the other. I think we make a great team. Now, don't be a stranger on here, hang around from time to time and lend a hand if you see something you know about. Nice talking to you.
