HDD query
Running a dual-booting system which, til yesterday, has been fine. Had been writing a dvd n left it over night and expected the system to be running fine in the morning!!
It wasnt.. I have an 80gb and a 120gb drive. The system previously had the 80gb in the the boot priority list behind my floppy n dvd drives. Now it wont boot from the 80gb drive. Changing the to 120gb in the boot priority list it will allow me to boot from either drive.. Yep it works.. but it isnt as it was before.. upon checking the Device Manager for disk drives it reads 'disk drive' (my 80gb) and 'WDC WD1200JD-xxxxx' (120gb) Both drives are Western Digital, does anyone have any ideas as to how i can get my drives reading as 'WDC WDxxxxxxxx' Many thanks Rob |

still no luck
I tried the last known good configuration and had no luck..
Didnt trying flushing CMOS as there isnt a problem with the 80gb being recognised by the BIOS and is recognised by DOS. The problem rears its head when i try to specify the 80gb to boot and then when the system tries to boot it wont n a get a message telling me something along the lines of incorrect boot media (not entirely sure off the top of my head). Changing the boot drive to the 120gb and there doesnt appear any problems and i can then boot to either OS (2000 on the 80gb, XP Pro on the 120gb). If i boot into 2000 and check the Device Manager both drives show up with the 'WDC WDxxxx-xxxxx' model no's. If i boot into XP Pro only the 120gb shows with its model no n the 80gb shows as 'Disk Drive' checking the properties says the drive is working properly. I dunno wot to try next.... Unplugging the 80gb and booting from the 120gb alone and then shutting down and reconnecting the 80gb, reinstalling or repairing 2000, or as a final measure which isnt too much of a problem but will take time to do, clean install of 2000 and start from scratch. Any advice on wot u would try Any help appreciated Rob |

I would try downloading boot it NG that prog is not to hard to use >>> it has a very good manual >>>> completly print it out first >>>> it has a very nice boot manager that I think can solve your woes >>>>>
here is the 30 day trial version http://terabyteunlimited.com/bootitng.html or you could try booting into the win xp recovery console and type "fixboot" I would unplug one drive at a time and do them both ??? here is a recovery console "how to" fixboot and fixmbr are both in there http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314058 keep us posted on your progress / dont hesitate to ask more questions
