I'd go to the Intel D845WN Download Page and upgrade the BIOS, since I suspect the one you have probably doesn't support LBA48, that happened late in 2002. If you read the Release Notes for their latest BIOS, you'll notice that it adds LBA48 support. You'll need this for disks larger than 127gigs. Other than the BIOS, I don't see any reason you can't use that disk.

I be willing to bet your system will support a 300 gig drive. There are a couple of things I would do to make sure it does.
#1 >>>> go to your motherboard makers website and download the newest available bios for your mother board and update your bios #2: download win XP service pack 2 >>> available at windows update site #3 >>>>> absolute worse case senario >>> install a PCI card IDE controller card ($35.00) then I will guarantee your a computer from 1999 will run that drive !! >>>>> but that wont be necessary !!?? enjoy joe

Help with Hard drive
I successfully fixed my hard drive, but had a problem cause my computer was not booting after i fixed the 300gb Hard drive, and i came to know the problem was that my IDE cable had to be replaced with a new one cause it could not load the 300gb hD. I dont know why? Are there many types of IDE cables available in the market and do they make a difference and are cd ROM IDE cables different from Hard drives?
Also now i need to ask Is it still require to update my Bios cause my PC is now working perfectly fine. And what size of partition would be appropriate to perform. 4 partitions or 3 ? I am not sure. Will it also make a difference in the PC speed cause right now i have 2 partions both of 40gb each on my computer from my 80gb Hard drive. And Windows is installed on 1 of the 40gb partitions. So I am actually planning to make 3 partions 90 each would it make my PC slow and is advisable to make 3 partions cause my Windows is only installed on 40gb small sixe. and now i will make 90 gb partions. Will that make any problemPLS REPLY THANKS |

Brad:
Yes IDE cables can be different for optical drives (cd-rom & dvd) than the hard drive cables. The faster better performing ATA 66 (your new drive should be at least an ATA 100 ) and above drives require an 80 wire cable to work at their peak performance; however the big drive should work with the old 40 wire cable but the drive will be reduced in speed down to ATA-33 = performance level = = = = -> sloooooow as far as partitions go / more partitions has no effect on the speed of the system >>> you can have up to four partitions per HARD DRIVE and have several hard drives as you are aware. You can partition the drive any way you desire. 90 gig partitions sounds reasonable to me ???? I would strongly suggest updating your bios though / John Will (tech above posted) stated your current bios version does not support LBA 48 which is critical to enabling a large drive ?????? you should be able to get an 80 wire ide hard drive cable at most any computer store and reather cheap at that. if you have any other questions fire away ??? joe
