simple question
say ive got a 20gb IDE100 that i boot off of.. nothing else.. and a SATA2 that everything else goes on.. will the IDE bottleneck the SATA2'S speed into IDE100 or will it just reduce it by some?

the IDE should have no impact on the SATA drive whatsoever as they are diff channels

well i thought games and apps and other stuff on my SATA2 would have to go through my IDE that has the OS on it, therefore taking away the SATA2 advantage.. but what i interpret from what you said was that if it does go through the IDE hd it has no reduction in gb/s?
sorry for reviving the topic |

I apoligize for not making my response clear enough / the ide drive is considerably slower than the sata drive / as such you would notice a slight performance loss vs having you OS on the IDE drive / however; once the OS has begun the process of allowing the program you are running to operate (which is on the sata drive) then the sata's muscle takes over for actually running the program.
I thought you question was more to the point of having the OS on the IDE drive somehow slows down the entire usuage of the SATA drive >>> the answer to that would be no/ they are on different channels; just like your tv channel 3 does not interfere with channel 5 the REAL performance diff between having the OS on the IDE drive & Sata drive really depends on the quality of the IDE drive >>>> if the drive is an ATA 100 or 133 and 7200 rpm and 8meg cache or more then you are not going to see a big diff in performance having the OS on the sata drive >>>> there will be a diff but slight one. if your sata drive has enough room ????? you could always make another partition and clone the contents of the OS boot partition from the IDE drive to the Sata drive and then you could boot from the Sata >>>> and see for yourself ???? regards joe
