external usb hard drive problem

its a maxtor calypso 80gb usb hard drive. the power lead was accidently pulled loose , when i switched it back on it started making a wierd noise, like when a disk cant be read properly on a ps2 game

If it makes an odd noise when you just power it up, it's probably time to take it apart and see if the drive is damaged by connecting it directly to a system for a test.

as john says, you better open it up
if it has a cooling fan, it might have been jarred when the power cord was yanked
