Dead drive?

I have a hard drive split into three partitions. Partitions 2 and 3 are readable, but 1 is not. When I try to explore partition #1, there are a bunch of directories and files that are jumbled characters. I tried to recover the data using Spinrite, but that gave me a fatal error and would not try to examine it. It wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to format and zero-fill it, but I'd like to try to get some files off of it before I try that.

If Spinrite can't read it, is it gone forever or can I format it? Why is that one partition messed up but not the others? TIA.

your partition being messed up is not an uncommon problem / many users have suffered that problem

here is a partition fixing program that is the king of partition restoration

you must remove the - from the name I am about to give you and type it into your web broswer to go there www.p-t-d.com

I highly doubt your hard drive has suffered any permanent damage as result of this glitch.

regards

joe
